Introduction
Gunsan is famous for its jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). Indeed, the old city center is home to the Gunsan Jjamppong Street, where one can find restaurants specializing in this dish. Bokseongnu is one such restaurant, famous for its jjamppong and muljjajang. Gunsan-style jjamppong is defined by the copious amounts of seafood ingredients, which imbue the soup with distinctively savory flavors. Bokseongnu’s take on this dish is notable for using both meat and seafood for the stock, creating a rather unique but no less flavorful soup. As for muljjajang, unlike the regular jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles), from which the dish gets its name, muljjajang does not use black bean sauce but uses clear seafood broth like crab soup instead. This imbues the dish with an outstandingly savory flavor. Bokseongnu enjoys nationwide fame, so one must set aside at least an hour for the waiting list and have to accommodate the short opening hours, but the fact that the joint continues to deliver great taste and ingredients without change over the years and the rather hearty amount of ingredients in the soup means that the store enjoys repeat visitors, some passing down the love for the restaurant across two or three generations. Note that the restaurant does not offer to-go options, but one can have the dish to-go provided they bring a suitable container.
